I find some of my emails are starred yellow with blue border. How and
why does this happen? Of what use is it?

couldn't find in gmail help

Click on the yellow star to make it disappear. It just means that you
have 'starred' the e-mail. I use it for mail I want to find again.
Over to the left, there is a category for starred mail. Click into it
and all the starred mails will be there
